hi everybody,
i dont know if this is the right thread. I coach only for 2 years. so i am an very unexperienced coach. for 2 years is started coach a under 16 team with a paleyer, who could bearly dribble for example he was not able to do an normal front crossover standing still niether could he shoot or had ever heard something of the triple threat position. another problem is and was that he has a lot of fear to do and try new things.
So over the 2 years he developt quikly. but often times he loses controll on drives and gets off-balance. my question is: is this a normal process because he lacks the experience in this situations or do i have to work with him on some special things to get this rigth.
thanks franka

It's probably both. He needs more experience and confidence with the ball and there are probably some things that you can do to help him develop. If he's out of control, I'd focus on jump stops in the lane to acquire balance and get him to slow down. From a team perspective, try to prepare him for his different options as he drives: if help comes to him, where is the open player?

so you think i should teach him more of an power move lay up than the normal 1-2 step layup? on drives most of the time he knows and sees his options but often throws not “shootable” passes because he is off balance.

Sounds like he needs more practice at game-speed to perfect his moves, ball handling and passes, unless there are any underlying issues affecting his balance (ankle injury, hip tightness, etc). The key is to feel under control at a high speed rather than feeling out of control. To get there, you need to practice the moves against defenders and at game-speed. I would probably work on 1v1 and 2v2 drills to increase the speed but keep the repetitions high.

i brian, hi everybody,
i have another question: what would you work on with a young pg 15 years old, 5' 9'' to 5 ' 10'' who was the most skilled player on the all state team and is a great athlet in terms of balance, coordination and a good one in quickness and explosiveness. what kind of advanced moves would you train and from a game perspective, what would you want him to do in a game. i always tell him to go out and go as fast as he can on fastbreaks, try to split pick and rolls as often as possible or try to get in the lane and finish for example.
thanks franka
