Jim Tallman's 4 golden rules which he drilled into us:

1) Do what you’re supposed to do,

2) Do it when you’re supposed to do it,

3) Do it to the best of your ability,

4) Do it that way all the time.

The author suggests the high school coach showed up late to test his team to follow through on these four things. I know that I was late to two practices last season, and I did not have an assistant coach, and the players started their warm-ups on their own. It was one of the most impressive things that I saw from them all season, as I would not expect that from an unsupervised junior varsity team. But, while I did not use these four things, it shows that they understood the idea.

I can imagine many coaches not wanting to hold their kids to that standard because they don't hold themselves to those standards (unfortunately).  I also believe that it is extremely important to have character education in sports.  We, as coaches, need to emphasize those attributes in the players before we emphasize other things on our priority list.
