This is from a soccer, basketball and volleyball study in Spain, so it is not entirely generalizable to basketball in the U.S./Canada, but the ideas are similar, if nothing else:

The most important reasons for attrition from the different team sports were having other things to do, dislike of the coach, and lack of team spirit.
