Ha! This makes me think of my first year when I filled up an entire chalkboard pregame of things they needed to remember. Recently I started moving away from x's and o's and talking more about mindset, confidence, fearlessness, being willing to make mistakes, trying new things, etc…
I let them shoot on their own for about 10 minutes to get in a personal groove, then we move to quickshot (shooting lines under the basket), then a 2 on 1 drill, then 3 on 3 with a rule (set 1 ballscreen before shot, 1 pick and roll, whatever). Winners stay on, and you win by either scoring or Offensive rebounding. We then go in to the lockerroom for about 2 minutes where I give them the talk I explained above. Then we come back out and I tell them to just shoot or play some slow 1on1 against each other. The main thing I want is for them to figure out how to get mentally prepared on their own, and be confident before and during the game.
But yeah Ive been in plenty of pregame speeches where its the same old coachspeak for 10+ minutes every game (lets get out there and play, good effort, etc)
Story:
I coached 1 year in New Mexico before coming to Kansas. The coach I worked with would always send the varsity into full-court outlet/layups as soon as the other team would go into the lockerroom. Even if it was for only 3-5 minutes, the girls would get some fullcourt running in before the game, I always thought that was a smart idea.
Moved here to Kansas and Id thought Id do the same thing here….nope! Thats against the rules, and the team can be charged a T. So there gos that idea. I do think its ridiculous though that we cant use the whole court if the team isnt out there.
