Quick question: what do high school coaches talk about before a game?

We arrived 45 minutes before our game today. We were the first game (J.V. girls). We shot around. Our opponents stood around and then at 35 minutes went into the locker room for 18 minutes enabling us to use both sides of the court and get up a bunch of shots.

At half-time (we led by 20+ points), the coach took them into the locker room and we nearly started the 2nd half without them.

What do coaches talk about for 18 minutes right before our game? All of our recent opponents have done the same thing, and we've won 3 of our last 4 by 30+ points. What are you trying to accomplish? What are you going over that you didn't go over at practice yesterday?

I start a different starting line-up every game. We come to the bench 1:00 before the game starts, I have their positions in our press and their positions in our offensive set on my wipeboard, we do a cheer and then play. I don't even begin to know what I would talk about for 18 minutes.

Ha!  This makes me think of my first year when I filled up an entire chalkboard pregame of things they needed to remember. Recently I started moving away from x's and o's and talking more about mindset, confidence, fearlessness, being willing to make mistakes, trying new things, etc…

I let them shoot on their own for about 10 minutes to get in a personal groove, then we move to quickshot (shooting lines under the basket), then a 2 on 1 drill, then 3 on 3 with a rule (set 1 ballscreen before shot, 1 pick and roll, whatever).  Winners stay on, and you win by either scoring or Offensive rebounding.  We then go in to the lockerroom for about 2 minutes where I give them the talk I explained above.  Then we come back out and I tell them to just shoot or play some slow 1on1 against each other.  The main thing I want is for them to figure out how to get mentally prepared on their own, and be confident before and during the game.

But yeah Ive been in plenty of pregame speeches where its the same old coachspeak for 10+ minutes every game (lets get out there and play, good effort, etc)

Story:

I coached 1 year in New Mexico before coming to Kansas.  The coach I worked with would always send the varsity into full-court outlet/layups as soon as the other team would go into the lockerroom.  Even if it was for only 3-5 minutes, the girls would get some fullcourt running in before the game, I always thought that was a smart idea.

Moved here to Kansas and Id thought Id do the same thing here….nope!  Thats against the rules, and the team can be charged a T.  So there gos that idea.  I do think its ridiculous though that we cant use the whole court if the team isnt out there.

I don't know if they have the rules here. officials don't arrive until 5-10 minutes before the game anyway…

I was going to play a full court game yesterday before our game, but didn't think of something quick enough…

I'm coaching boys in a different state and see the same thing. However, they do have the rule where you cannot cross half court. The officials can't figure out what a traveling violation is, but they sure do watch the half court line like a hawk during warm-ups and half-time.

When we go on the road, coaches ask if we need a locker room. I always decline. What's the point? There are 60 people in the stands; it's not like I have to talk over a band, cheerleaders, and a crowd. We're not really going to change anything on a blackboard anyway; if we need to change something, I show them on the court, just like I would at practice. Otherwise, we get up shots. It's nice of the other team to vacate the court so we can walk thru plays or defensive situations if necessary…

We have had coaches take their teams into the locker room for 20 minutes of a 30 minute warm-up. Crazy.

My pre-game speech is essentially: “Play hard. Get your match-ups. Move the ball. Rebound. Be aggressive. Take the game to them. Let's go. 1, 2, 3…”
