I enjoy your articles on athletic development and fundamental movements. How would you go about developing these skills within players if they are not developed already.  I struggle sometimes to try to incorporate these skill development within a normal practice sessions.  Sometimes we assume they should be developed but they aren't.  Would you take 5 to 7 minutes and work on them specifically in practice?  Would you incorprate them into a warm up would you adapt basketball drills to make them more specific to the game.

Thanks in advance

The exact answer depends on the age of the players. However, at the minimum, I use the warm-up as a time to develop these skills. From the first practice, for instance, I am specific about how to change directions properly, and every time we jog or run during a warm-up, I specify the type of change of direction. From the start, I also emphasize proper landing mechanics and we do some type of jumping or hopping drill in the warm-up every day.

I do not try to make these activities basketball-specific. However, I think all the general skills are a part of basketball-specific skills, so the next part of practice after our warm-up is generally something that incorporates many general skills into a basketball-specific environment: typically a small-sided full-court game or a game of tag with a basketball.

With older players who are behind their teammates, I would spend more time individually before or after practice or during the off-season to correct any deficiencies.
