Hey Coaches,

I am coaching an inexperienced group of girls. We try to set up in an open post – five people around the perimeter to take advantage of the give and go.  What I find happening is that if we get the give and go things kinda break down after that.  We put up the shot or get a turn over.  The game is new to alot of the girls so it could be in experience but inevitably it becomes two athletes on offence and the rest are standing around.  This is not by design but a bit of a funtion of their not know what do do.  Alot of time the players on the baseline don't touch the ball.

How to I ensure more kids get involved – or is it a sympotom of growing pains and thing will improve over time.  Am I expecting too much of them too soon?

Sometimes they deviate and the baseline players drift/flash to the baseline some times they can get the ball but alot of times it clogs the area and takes the cut away? They seem to “freelance” it is effective in the short term but does it improve them in the long term in terms of teaching spacing and some structure?

Thoughts……

After a player cuts, does the corner person fill her spot? For instance, if the middle person passes to the right wing and cuts to the basket, the left wing should fill to the middle and the left baseline should fill to the left wing. This encourages some more movement and gets players switching spots.

I would encourage them to work for great shots. I also tell my team not to expect the first cutter to be open, because the defense is set. We want to reverse the ball before we truly attack. We want the defense to shift and move and then attack.

But, you're expectations might be high too. I wouldn't discourage those who freelance because it is harder to get those who follow directions to move beyond the directions and become players than it is to take the freelancers and give a little bit of structure. We have players make ill-advised cuts all the time, but I prefer that to five guys standing around…

Thanks for your reply,

Alot of time after the inital cut they keep watching the ball and return to the area they initially cut from.It kinda messes any other movement to fill the spot up.  They are very ball centric and seem to worry about being around the ball – to me anyways.

In theroy the baseline spot should fill up but in hasn't gotten that far yet – we are still in the crawling stage and that is a run to us.

To reinforce the cutting through and fill – should I call a violation if the player does not cut or a fill doen't occur if we play half court offence?

If freelancing occurs what or how should I cue them to space back out – alot of times they cut and stay and take up space someone else could be moving into.

Thanks in advance

My general rule is that you basket cut to the rim. Once you get to the basket, you find the open area: I tell them to cut to a corner and then fill up when it's open.

As for calling a violation, you could. My two standard violations are: (1) Pass and cut; and (2) catch and square to the basket. On the cut, if they don't cut to the rim, I call it a turnover; so if they take 2-3 steps and then fill their spot again, it's a TO to me.

If they freelance, I cue with spacing or after the possession, I might show why the cut at that time isn't what we want because it took away a better cut or a post up or something.
