Just wanted to let everyone know we are still lifting twice a week and the kids play cut-throat games afterwards.  Nothing really structured right now.  When school starts up in a month I will start posting complete practice plans.

We are starting back to school this week and will start conditioning on Monday.  We have been working on a practice plan for the year and I will post it with drills. We want to focus solely on our emphasis and nothing else.  We think this can be done in 90 min. and still cover all our bases.  Most of them come from Blitz Basketball and some are our own.  Comments are appreciated:

  • (10)Ball handling-2-ball, perfect square, open court moves, 4-lines, walberg lay-ups, 3 to score
  • (10)Individual Defense-1v1 FC, closeout progression, 1v1 Fosters, 1v1 closeout, lane slides
  • (15)Team Defense-Army drill, 3v3 hockey, 5v4 scramble, defending sets
  • (10)Tactical Shooting Progression-2v0, 3v0 progressions
  • (15)Off. games-2v2, 3v3 memphis closeout, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5 cut-throat games
  • (20)Team Play-game situations, game preparation, scrimmage
  • (10)FT's/shooting-olympic shooting, 5-spot, 6 min. drill, bubba ft's

Coach,

I am thinking about using Blitz this season with a youth basketball team.  Do you have any suggestions on how to implement the offense or defense?

Coach I would start w/the 2v0 and 3v0 progressions and then after that do a walkthrough of the offense 5v0 explaining spacing and what you are looking for from it.  After that considering how old I would go either 5v5 or 2v2 and 3v3.  If they are under 13 yrs old I start w/2v2 and 3v3 games.  If they are older then I start w/5v5 and work back to the 2v2 and 3v3.  Then as the season progresses I work back up to the whole.  Any more questions just ask.

Last week before official team practice begins.  We are doing no lifting and playing volleyball the entire time to change things up.  They will be split in 4 teams and the two who arent playing will be jumping rope.  Tournament style so everyone gets to play about equal minutes.

Yesterday went well considering it was our first practice of the year.  Guys were a little gassed but we have a very high tempo at practice so it always takes about a week to get in the groove.  Today we are shooting more and emphasizing defense through our game play.  It will go as follows:

  1. Dynamic warm-up (5)
  2. Daily 45  (45) Skill-Layups left which includes 2v0 progression, olympic shooting, 5-spot this will take about 25 minutes / Texas 231 / 2v2 memphis closeout, 3v3 memphis closeout we call them attack 22 and 33 but they are the same drills
  3. FT's (5)
  4. 4v4 Defensive cut-throat (15)
  5. Army drill-15
  6. Stop and score-15 a 5v5 live scrimmage where one team wins by getting a stop first and then scoring on the next offensive possession, as the yr goes on we work up to 3 stop and scores
  7. 4v4 defensive cut-throat (15) 3 screens before a shot, defense fights through, no switch
  8. Cool down (5)

If there are questions about anything dont hesitate to ask.

Today is our 3rd day of practice.  We go 2 hard and 1 easy so Wednesdays we only go for 90 min.  We will also lift before practice today.

  1. Dynamic warm-up (5)
  2. Daily 45 (45)-Lay-ups right side, Texas 231, Texas 341, olympic shooting, 4v4 off. cut-throat
  3. FT's (5)
  4. Army Drill (15)
  5. Stop and score emphasizing defensive rules (15)-no splits, pressure ball and blockout
  6. Cooldown

Not much to the practice but it has alot of high intensity shooting and competitive work.  Plus we get an emphasis on defense.  Also I have to do Army drill daily, my players love it and would do it all practice if they could.

Texas 341 is a transition defense and offense breakdown drill working with numbers on offense and down numbers on defense.  The set-up goes as follows: 3 defensive players a the half-court line spread out, 4 offensive players at the ft line facing them spread out and 1 defensive player under the rim.  On the whistle a coach throws the ball in and the 4 offensive players attack the 3 defenders while the trailer sprints to get into the play.  We play down and  back, if there is a score the 4 offensive players get into our 2-2-1 press, if theres a miss then they sprint back and transition defense rules apply.\

Today b/c of meetings we practiced in the morning and limited it to a lifting and shooting workout:

  1. Dynamic warm-up
  2. Deadlift 5×2@70%
  3. Med-ball push-ups 3x max reps
  4. Chinups 3x max reps
  5. Triceps band pushdowns 2-3 sets of max reps
  6. Shooting consisted of 50 free throws and weak area improvement skill development drills
