I received an email about closeouts based on an article that I wrote last year. I wrote about replacing the traditional stutter step with a sprint and hop. The coach said he disagreed at first, but then changed and had a lot of success. This year, the varsity coach mandated the traditional approach and they are struggling to close out to shooters.

Does anyone else teach the sprint and hop rather than the stutter step?

The video below illustrates several game closeouts which do not resemble the stutter-step closeout. The defender usually hops into his stop and then adjusts. The best clip starts at :09 with the defender running away from the camera.

I like the sprint-and-hop, but they key is for players to understand they have to play low. i've taught it, but the instinct for most players is to do an exaggerated hop – their head gets way too high, their body opens up, and they leave an extra second for the offensive man to just blow by them (often when the defender is still coming down from his “hop”). they key is to get them to sprint — get low — keep their  balance and don't let their momentum push them forward.

i will admit, however, that i've often reverted to teaching the stutter step because i think it's a good athletic skill to have. i'm surprised at how many kids, many of whom play multiple sports, haven't ever been taught it…i'm surprised even more how many haven't just figured it out for themselves.
