Coaching a relatively inexperienced group of girls who seem to have trouble getting past their the initial defender in the open court.  Our league plays modified rules were if a team scores they must give the offence half to bring up the ball.  I try to get who ever brings up the ball to attack the defender who is waiting at half court and try to get by her. (defenses isn't great, they usually over play the wings but the pass back door is too long to make .  My player will often veer off to the right going too wide almost to the three point lines sometimes.  She does manage to get around her but  I feel she is taking too much space to do so.  I have introduced the hesitation and the cross over in practice and we work on the Fosters drill but I am wondering what I should tell them to focus on -  a visual cue they could use, an analogy- I don't know if I am explaining what I want well enough.  I have tried to cue them and tell them to go directly to the defence and make a move about a body lengh away from them so that they don't make the move to early and it is read by the defense.  The other problem we run into in previous years- if they are not more confident they try to make an entry pass to the wind from their side of half. Another issue could be poor ballhandling and not seeing the defender properly because their head is down.  What drills or small sided games could reinforce making the move and keeping the head up.
