I'd love to get the perspective of any coaches who have started (or are considering starting) a Playmaker's Basketball Development League (the one Brian created). I would love to start one in my area (San Francisco East Bay), because I think so many kids would benefit from true instruction in fundamentals, and so there's not as much emphasis on constructing powerhouse AAU teams (which is already happening in fourth grade).
Ideally, I'd love the perspective and background on the logistics of setting it up (gym space, advertising, insurance, etc), as well as how you handle perceptions (“Why would my kid need this? He's already a superstar” kind of mentality). How does the PDBL compete with the AAU teams (maybe it's not really the same kind of thing, but in terms of a player's limited time, it certainly creates an opportunity cost – in some cases, he'll be able to do one league but not the other).
Again, I'd love to set it up…I just worry that the CYO and AAU leagues are so institutionalized that people may not “get” the benefit of something like this.
Thanks for any advice…
