Transition Defence

Hey Coaches,

While watching a JV bball game over the weekend I noticed the offensive guards at the top of the key would try and steal the ball once they turned it over or if there was a rebound and it came out to a player in their area.  At first I thought it was lazy on their part but once the team got pocession they failed to capitalize with a quick outlet and they looked to start the transition with a dribble.  Even though I though it looked like bad defence it was enough to tie up the ball handler some what.  Is this something you should encourage or does the potential for a quick steal out weight the potential negative for a quick pass and transition. A better team in transition might pass it out quicker and take advantage of the defence not falling back quick enought.

Any thoughts.

That's Ralph Miller's Pressure Basketball.

All depends on the relationship of other players. If nobody is behind you, why not push up on the ball to slown down their transition? If someone is behind you, that's dangerous, but if a teammate is close, why not? It's easier with weaker or less talented players. Harder with better, faster, stronger players. But, if the defender is aggressive, and the whole team is on the same page, it can be effective.
