I watched a video of a player today to evaluate his shooting, and it was apparent that he had suffered a right ankle sprain. It affected every aspect of his shot. I had never met the player and knew nothing about his injury; it was that obvious. I see this a lot with players who never rehabilitate an injury fully.

Here are some exercises to use for rehab:

What about a couple of years later?  Ankle still swollen, athlete always wears a brace (would like to not wear it).  Will these excercises still work?  Or is a different treatment required?

The exercises will likely work to a degree, but if the injury has lingered, the athlete likely has developed new motor patterns which would need to be corrected. As for moving off the ankle brace, these exercises, barefoot training, single-leg training and more will help to re-strengthen the ankle. I think jumping rope on a slightly unstable surface – like a wrestling mat – with bare feet is a great way to improve proprioception and strength in the foot and ankle. Running on sand, using wobble boards, etc. will also help, especially with someone with a long-term injury who likely needs more work than these exercises, though I would start with these and progress the intensity (through instability, speed, etc) as needed.
