I met with Gavin McMillan a couple weeks ago and he said that he does not do squats. Then, I found this video by Mike Boyle:

Lesson: single-leg squats, not conventional back squats.

The Train for Hoops program (www.trainforhoops.com) incorporates back squats, as squats are a foundational movement of a strength program. However, the program de-emphasizes back squats compared to other programs and uses front squats, step-ups, single-leg squats and other exercises within the program.

Trying to develop off season program for our teams (high school level), very confused about how and when to include skill work, games, plyometrics and strength training – how do we fit it all in?  Any thoughts?  We are thinking of purchasing Mike Boyle's Functional Training 3.0.  Anyone have thoughts on that?

Thoughts? I've written books on the subject! Last spring, I wrote the off-season plans for a couple high school programs.

I have not read Boyle's latest book, though I have read Functional Training for Sports

Ultimately, the schedule depends on the players, facilities available and time available.

I know some varsity coaches who believe that the best approach is skill work exclusively. Obviously, other programs play lots of games. Personally, the best players and the best teams are the most athletic, so I emphasize plyos, lifting weights, agility, etc. in the off-season.

Have most of your books.  Love the newsletter.  Looking to use some of the newsletter ideas with the train for hoops site, with plyos, skill work and a few summer league games.   Do you have something available that we can purchase to help us in planning and implementing our off season program.  We are starting this week with the exercises on train for hoops site.

I ask the players that I train for the three things that they think they need to improve. With a team, you probably have to gear it more for the team than an individual, unless you have lots of time and/or assistant coaches who can individualize workouts to a greater extent. At the high school level, a general plan would be to improve agility, shooting and competitiveness. That would probably be my emphasis.

My non-basketball work (weights, plyos, agility, speed, etc) would emphasize a lateral component and developing power. On-court, I would start from the base and build players shots using the five-step progression in 180 Shooter (www.180shooter.com). I would finish workouts with lots of small-sided games to develop competitiveness and game awareness and to introduce some of the basic concepts in our offense (pick-and-rolls, screens, etc).

the breakdown of time and such would depend on the players and the available time.
